It’s September! And those of us working/living with young people are determined to start the new school year off on the right foot. Many authors (adult and adolescent) take seriously the job of getting children to read and are ready to help us lesser mortals. Several familiar names in children’s publishing are now hosting impressive sites for kids (and their grown-ups) to enjoy. If you live with guys, or are the parent of some smaller guys, you’ll want to visit Jon Scieszka’s space on the web – Guys READ. There are lists of recommended books along with Mr. Scieszka’s trademark silliness and fun. In addition, James Patterson, working in collaboration with Judy Freeman has launched Read Kiddo Read - another award winning source for book lists, author interviews and ideas for sharing the joy of reading with your family. Take a moment, check them out and pick up a good book to start the school year!

Children’s Literature Blogs
Mar 10th, 2008 by dparker
A large number of people (teachers, librarians, authors, illustrators, book editors, storytellers, publishers, professors, and parents) interested in children’s literature, have created weblogs to share their love of books. You can expect to find frank reviews, plot summaries, suggestions for classroom use, thoughts on the writing process and news from the lives of authors and illustrators.
Think this sounds like it might be interesting? Visit Bound to Stay Bound Books, select the “Library Corner” tab, and then “Links” to access a long list of literature related blogs. Be sure to scroll down the page as some of the most interesting may not be near the top. Happy blog reading!
Destiny catalog from home
Feb 27th, 2008 by dparker
Did you know you don’t have to be at school to look for available titles in the school library collection?
Since January(2007), when the library software was upgraded to Destiny, all users have the ability to search from any workstation with Internet access and a Web browser. Simply visit the school website, choose “For Staff” from the menu bar, then select “Library Software”, then “Destiny at Home”.
You’re able to search for materials, not only at AGIS, but throughout the district, determine feasibility for particular courses of study, and use the WebPath Express feature to identify quality websites for incorporation into your lessons and classroom activities. WebPath, (like Nettrekker) provides trustworthy, relevant sites that have been educator-reviewed and verified.
Try it out, see how easy it is to use, and bypass all those search engines that return millions of hits for every topic. Make the library catalog your first searching stop and see all the exciting materials we have to offer!
